Hundreds of years ago there lived a Brahmin who lived like a Sage . He was a great devotee of Kodungalooramma . Once he decided to go on a Piligrimage through many places. While setting on, he invoked the idol which he used to worship into a stone and to a stick which had golden rings. He travelled with this divine stone and stick from one place to another and reached near a big pond which is at present near to the eastern side of N.A.D . He kept the divine Stone and stick under a big mango tree and went on to have a bath. This pond is Known as Vaaykaamkulam . In olden days the Ezhunalippu (the procession to the temple on festival day) started from here. The mango tree is known as Ambalam Kutti Maav
After his bath , the Brahmin went to the near by forest. He placed the divine stone and stick under a huge tree. Also there was a sarpakkavu(an idol of nagas or snakes) nearby. This sarpakkavu had a huge tree on which bats used to hang down. For the rememeberence of the resting of that Supreme brahmin , now also the deity presiding here is open. Here the deity is known as Chudala Bhadrakaali. Then he went on in search of a good place for placing the idol and finally he reached the place where the kurumbakkavu temple is located at present. He placed the Deity and stick at Auspicious time. But the Kodungalooramma is known as kurumbakavilamma here. The deity was first placed on open place . Long time after the Brahmin's death the gold stick disappeared. The Mahashakthi still resides on the same stone here where the Brahmin placed it.
The Bhaavam (the state of existence)
After the fight between Kaali and Dhaarikan,Kaali held the head of Dhaarikan in left hand and the sword in her right hand. She had a burning eyes and she was very much angry. All were feared seeing Kaali in this form. To calm down the anger of kaali , Lord Shiva laid down in her way. After seeing Lord Shiva laying down,Kaali became Calm.At that time she took the head of Dharikan from left hand to right hand and the sword from right hand to left hand. The calmned Bhadrakaali asked her father Lord Shiva what she should do now. Then Shiva asked her to exist by blessing the devotees according to their wishes from now onwards. The Bhagavathy is existing here in this state.
The temple was owned and administered by the Kalathil Family for many years and it was handed over to Vishwa Hindu Parishad on 10-2-1973 by them. After the taking over , many developments were taken up,like construction of the surrounding wall, land acquisition etc. For a long time the main source of income was the Pidiari or the rice collected from the devotees. For that purpose four or five people usually go to many homes and collect the rice from them. At that time almost all the villagers were farmers.
The Sreekovil of lord Ayyappa was constructed by finding the presence of Lord Ayyappa in Astamangalya Prashnam and the Consecration or PRATISHTA (Rohini nakshatram of midhunam) was done in 1989.The presence of Lord Ganapathy was also found in Astamangalya Prashnam and Devaprashnam followed by it after few years.
